Bridges and beaches

As evening falls we are heading across the Sunshine Skyway Bridge to our Sarasota rest stop at the Surestay Best Western Sarasota Lido Beach.

This incredible feat of engineering opened in 1987 and is the second bridge of that name on the site. It spans Tampa Bay and connects St Petersburg to Terra Ceia.

The sky is now a stunning streak of fire silhouetting fishing piers against its flaming colours.

The next morning we enjoy a poolside breakfast at our cute little stereotypical roadside motel before heading for more beach action.

Today’s beach exploration kicks off at the stunning Lido key beach situated on a barrier island off the coast of Sarasota.

Then we trundle further up the barrier island to Coquina Beach for some more exquisite turquoise sea and white sand.

I can’t get enough of these quintessentially American lifeguard huts!

Our final stop on the peninsula is the pretty town of Anna Maria, situated right at the very top of the spit of land. It has more wild beaches and some gorgeous Floridian architecture!
