Grand bazaar

Joy of joys it is market time (again) so let’s go hand in hand into another sensory overload!

This time it is the Grand Bazaar – a vibrant chaotic sprawl of colour, smells and tourist tat.

My mum is a trained tailor so we have always shared a love of haberdashery, and there’s bobbins, ribbons and gewgaws aplenty!

Even the road to the bazaar is lined with fascinating sights, including some very dubious military items for sale!!

The Grand Bazaar is also known as Kapalı Çarşı and is a large, historic covered market. It’s a labyrinth of streets and alleys with over 4,000 shops.

Dating back to the 15th century, it was once a major center for trade in the Ottoman Empire.

All this shopping is thirsty work so we stop off in the tiniest of side street eateries for a pomegranate juice and some pizza!
