Me and my gardening buddy headed to the NEC for the horticultural wonderland that is Gardener’s World Live! Here’s the Kings Meadow – a delicious tide of every shade of cornflower and other wildflowers. Me giving peonies the stink eye – I adore them but they utterly refuse to grow in my garden! So itContinue reading “Gardens galore”

Lykavitos
Standing 277 meters above sea level, Lycabettus Hill (sometimes spelt Lykavitos) is the highest point of Athens. At the top of the hill you will find the Greek whitewashed church of Agios Georgios (St. George) and some impressive views across the city. But it’s a grey day, a little like North Wales, so not feeling theContinue reading “Lykavitos”
Aegina
We always like to try and get onto a boat wherever we go so we’ve hopped on a ferry from Athens to one of the closest islands. Aegina is one of the Saronic Islands 17 miles from Athens. The name comes from Aegina, the mother of the hero Aeacus, who was born on the islandContinue reading “Aegina”
Granada
Hot on the heels of our Indiana Jones style adventure at the Caminito del Rey we’ve jumped in the hire car and headed to the venerable old city of Granada. Most famous for the incredible Alhambra, this grand old dame is a pretty place full of beautiful architecture and more than a little Moorish charm.Continue reading “Granada”
Scaligero castle
Today is all about the fortifications – the imposing Scaliger castle to be precise. This amazing structure dominates the little town of Sirmione and I have been wanting to see it for ages! Sirmione was already known to the ancient Romans because of its strategic position – a peninsula that stretches into the lake –Continue reading “Scaligero castle”
Floating in Funchal
We’re catching the Funchal cable car up to the botanical gardens. The cable car takes you 3200 meters upwards to the parish of Nossa Senhora do Monte, created in 1565 and now just known as Monte. Funchal shrinks into the distance as we head upwards. Resembling a tiny toy town way beneath us. Maderia isContinue reading “Floating in Funchal”
Madeira markets
Heading back to our hotel we spot a succulent display of local fruits – most of which we have no idea what they are! Grapes, avocados and dragon fruit are probably the only ones I can identify with any certainty! Any ideas? Grapes are put to good use in a local restaurant later as weContinue reading “Madeira markets”
Cala Mondragó
It’s a cloudy start but the sun finally comes out to show the stunning colours of Cala Mondragó . Cala Mondragó is a small sandy beach located on the southwest coast of Mallorca within the natural park of Mondragó.
Cala Figuera
Cala Figuera is a sleepy fishing village sat in a quiet bay. The bay was named after the fig trees that characterise the landscape. It is a Y-shaped bay located on the southeast coast of Mallorca. The two inlets: Caló d’En Boira and Caló d’En Busques are bounded by low cliffs. Here’s some boats gentlyContinue reading “Cala Figuera”
Windmills
Windmills. That is all. Dotted around the Majorcan countryside like quaint relics of a gentler time.
